“B” Day is Coming!!!!!! Lakota’s dreaded busing cuts!
“B” Day is coming! “B” Day is the day that the school busing cuts are implemented.
On January 18th, Lakota will proceed to cut busing to students K through 8th grade within a mile radius. And all high school students will lose their busing.
I remember in 2005 when the same program was implemented except it was only half as tough, the radius was only a half mile. My wife had already been driving my kids to school each day so we didn’t think life would change much.
On January 7, 2011 I went on WLW to talk about this experience with Doc Thompson along with a number of other issues that center around the growing budget problems regarding school funding. We had a great discussion that covered a lot of ground. Worth listening to!
Instantly, the day of the “B” Day in 2005, the roads filled students trying to get to school, and what used to take 15 minutes turned into 30 to 40 minutes of roads loaded with the extra traffic. Accidents happened and my wife was an unfortunate victim. She had a collision with an inexperienced young driver that was cast into a situation he wasn’t prepared for. The boy didn’t have enough experience to be driving, and had been rushed through his licensing process because his parents couldn’t drive him to school.
The airbags deployed in the collision to our beloved Jeep Grand Cherokee which was paid off and a wonderful vehicle which totaled the vehicle even though it only sustained a damaged bumper. Because of the air bag deployment the cost of repair exceeded what insurance agreed to pay for the repair.
That Jeep Cherokee was an unfortunate victim to the “B” Day of 2005.
The “B” Day of 2011 will be equally devastating for some unfortunate victim, because when you put that many people on the road at the same time, bad things are bound to happen. And when it does, remember that cutting busing which only saves $600,000 this year, and 2.8 million next year only represents a fraction of the overall operating budget. For every bus they keep off the road the school system saves $70K.
Also remember that the school system was paying Ryan Fahrenkamp, the Lakota teacher busted in January for child pornography with a school computer involving students of his class, 70K a year. That teacher cost the same as operating a bus for one year. I think a bus is more valuable than a pervert teacher that stayed hidden behind layers of union protections for the last 2 years. But that’s just my opinion.
The leadership of Lakota thinks it’s more efficient to take away buses. That’s why we have budget problems. Just so everyone remembers the last levy attempt and the numbers numbers involved, here is a collection of the media blitz in the final days prior to the vote.
It’s important to remember how we got here, and the smoke screens that get put in place to make you forget.

School finance will never change until the public screams “enough!” As a former board member and a person that has spent thirty years researching education and school finance, I can say that the union’s power controls every aspect of the educational process, including busing.
Superintendents are groomed for that position early in their careers. They are advocates of the “change agent” process and are master change agents. They are men and women who spend most of their time engraciating the community leaders and business people. Those people usually control the views of the community and those people are in the “news” supporting the schools and levies.
They are also the people, other than the union members, that gain the most when lots of money from the schools is floating around.
When I review school financial reports, I see very little control or scrutiny in the spending of our precious tax dollars. A couple of years ago, I know for a fact, that many credit cards were floating around the district. No control on the spending. When the statements on these cards was requested, the treasurer said that there were no “credit cards.” After the levy was passed he revealed that they had
“purchasing cards.” Of course it was too late by that time to expose the abuse. At the time the request was made there were announcements on the school’s p.r. system for everyone to “turn in
the district’s credit cards.” So much for transparency. Until there are “Forensic Audits” required for the public’s money, the abuse will continue.

Both my children spent their remaining years of their senior years traveling Europe, camping at Stonehenge and exploring places like the British Museum, and I’m eternally proud of them, while the other kids their age were spending their Friday and Saturday nights drunk and puking at mindless parties and wasting away while they waited for college classes to start in the fall of the following year. [...] A brief synopsis of the information is this. Last year I listed the top income recipients who made over 65K per year, which came out to 434 employees, which I thought was a lot. This year, even taking off the superintendent, who resigned one week after the original list came out, the amount of employees escalated 625 employees! That means that in just one year, when supposedly teachers took a pay freeze in August of 2010, 191 more employees broke past the 65K per year barrier and became a top wage earner just because of the step increases demanded by the union contract. Last year 120 million of Lakota’s operating budget of 160 million went to just salaries and wages. Of that 120 million $31,900,416.00 went to these wonderful employees making over 65K per year. I thought that was a lot. This year, that number exploded to $48,158,105.00! An increase in salary wages of $16,257,689.00. That does not include all increases in wages, just the wages for employees making more than 65K per year! The total amount of money saved in the emergengy budget reductions for 2011 which is causing layoffs, busing cuts, elective elimination, pay for play sports, etc is $13 million. Lakota spent more money on the step increases on just the employees making over 65K per year than it… [...]
